2020 South American: Gabi Pessanha, Jaime Canuto win double gold

Masks, alcohol gel and strict access protocols ensured the CBJJ staff with the necessary requirements to safely hold its first tournament in Brazil during the Covid-19 pandemic. The South American Jiu-Jitsu Championship, in Rio de Janeiro, was the tournament chosen to kick off this new phase.

Almost two thousand athletes were divided into four days of action. The Arena da Juventude, in Deodoro, with more than 14 thousand square meters, had only six fight areas, spaced apart from each other, to guarantee the operation at a comfortable pace.

This Sunday, the black-belts took to the action, and two names stood out in their divisions: Gabrieli Pessanha, from Infight, and Jaime Canuto, from GFTeam, both winning double gold.

For Gabi, the golden day started when she faced Joaquina Bonfim in the super-heavyweight final, winning with a foot lock. In the absolute, Gabi defeated Claire-France Thevenon and Sabatha Lais and, in the final, dominated Amanda Monteiro with an elastic score of 19 to 0 on points.

In the men’s section, Jaime Canuto won two very tough semifinals to guarantee, with his teammates, the top of two podiums for GFTeam. First, at medium heavyweight, Jaime shared gold with Alexandre Rocha. Then it was Wallace Costa’s turn to go up with Jaime to close out the open division.
