UNCASVILLE, Conn. —Undefeated rising star Joey Davis takes pride in representing his city of Compton.
Davis (8-0 MMA, 8-0 BMMA) extended his perfect professional record when he defeated Bobby Lee (12-5 MMA, 0-1 BMMA) via unanimous decision at Bellator 253 on Thursday, where he continued to show off his wrestling abilities.
A four-time NCAA Division II champion, Davis went undefeated through all four years of his collegiate wrestling career at Notre Dame College of Ohio, becoming only the third NCAA wrestler to ever accomplish that feat.
As he continues to rack up more incredible accolades, Davis hopes he can be an example to aspiring kids in Compton, Calif.
“It’s tremendous because all I try and do is put on for the inner-city kids and let them know that dreams do come true and people are watching you if you’re willing to work for it and that’s all I’m about,” Davis told reporters, including MMA Junkie, at the post-fight news conference at Mohegan Sun Arena. “Whatever you believe in, you can achieve, and I’m really proud of my performance and putting it on for the city of Compton.”
Not the calling out type, Davis said he is willing to face anyone Bellator puts in front of him as he continues to hone his skills in preparation for the welterweight division’s top contenders.
“Beating a champion from another organization, that just shows what I’m capable of in eight fights now, so the sky is the limit for me,” Davis said. “I still gotta get back to the drawing board, get back to practice, get back on the consistent grind because what’s going on right now, you never know what’s gonna happen tomorrow.”
He continued, “My resume speaks for itself, and pretty much all my fights you can see I have a pretty nice takedown, but that does not dictate the whole fight. I still gotta work on a lot of stuff and I’m sure that everybody’s gonna be watching this film and see what my mistakes are, but at the end of the day it’s still a fight.”
