A pivotal bantamweight matchup is set for the UFC’s kickoff event for 2021.

Multiple people with knowledge of the promotion’s plans confirmed to MMA Fighting that a bout between Julianna Pena and Sara McMann will take place Jan. 16 after both fighters confirmed the booking on social media.

A location has yet to be announced for the fight card, which will be the promotion’s first of the new year.

Pena looks to get back to her winning ways after returning to the octagon following a 15-month layoff and being submitted by Germaine de Randamie in the third round at October’s UFC Fight Island 4 event. The Ultimate Fighter 20 winner is 5-2 in the UFC, which includes her most recent victory over Nicco Montano at UFC Sacramento in July 2019.

McMann, a one-time title challenger, snapped a two-fight skid at the beginning of the year after nearly two years out of the octagon with a unanimous decision win over Lina Lansberg at UFC Raleigh. Throughout her promotional tenure, McMann also holds wins over Lauren Murphy, Jessica Eye, Alexis Davis and Gina Mazany.

The UFC’s Jan. 16 event will be headlined by an exciting featherweight matchup between Max Holloway and Calvin Kattar.
