Cage Warriors standout Mason Jones has his first UFC opponent.
MMA Fighting confirmed with sources with knowledge of the matchup that the two-division Cage Warriors champion will make his UFC debut against Mike Davis (8-2) in a lightweight bout at an upcoming Fight Island event on Jan. 20. The news was first reported by MMA Island.
Jones (10-0) ended his Cage Warriors run with a bang in 2020, winning a pair of championship bouts. In March, the 25-year-old Welshman scored a first-round TKO of Joe McColgan to capture a vacant 155-pound title, then he followed that with a first-round TKO of Adam Proctor to win the European promotion’s vacant 170-pound title.
Davis, 28, did not step into the octagon in this past year after withdrawing twice from scheduled bouts against Giga Chikadze. He is 1-1 in the UFC so far, most recently putting on a dominant performance against Thomas Gifford in October 2019 that ended in a third-round KO victory.
UFC Fight Island 8 is scheduled to be the second event of a three-event week in Abu Dhabi, beginning on Jan. 16 and ending on Jan. 23 with the UFC 257 pay-per-view. The Jan. 20 show is currently without an official headliner as it was reported Tuesday that Khamzat Chimaev was forced to withdraw from his welterweight main event clash with Leon Edwards.
