UFC Austin free fight: 25-year-old Donald Cerrone earns WEC title shot with wild, Fight of the Night

Donald Cerrone’s first shot at a major title came a long time ago.

The 54-fight veteran first fought for a notable championship belt back in 2009 when he challenged WEC lightweight king Jamie Varner.

“Cowboy” earned the opportunity to fight for gold after defeating Rob McCullough in a wild, three-round contest that earned Fight of the Night. The fight took place at WEC 36 on November 2008 in Hollywood, Fla.

A young Cerrone (36-16-1 MMA, 29-16-1 UFC), 25 years old to be exact, put on one of the best performances of his career at the time, battering McCullough on the feet, while taking his best shots over the course of 15 minutes. The win kept Cerrone undefeated in MMA.

You can watch his ninth professional career win in the video above.

Cerrone returns to the cage this Saturday in the co-main event of UFC on ESPN 37 in Austin, Texas. He takes on fellow veteran Joe Lauzon.

Cerrone looks to snap a six-fight winless streak that includes five losses (four by finish) and one no contest. Cerrone’s most recent win occurred in May 2019 when he dominated Al Iaquinta en route to a unanimous decision.
