Poirier and Hooker were matched up in the main event of UFC Vegas 4 on June 27 in Las Vegas and the two fan favorites lived up to their billing. For five rounds, they went back-and-forth on the feet, with Hooker taking the early advantage and looking like he might claim Poirier’s spot in the rankings.
However, the tide began to turn in round three and then in round four Poirier nearly ended the fight with his superior ground game. Hooker made it to the judges’ decision though and while it didn’t go his way, he did pick up his second straight Fight of the Night award. The incredible effort also landed both fighters at No. 3 on MMA Fighting’s 2020 Fight of the Year list.
With the win, Poirier maintained his top-5 position and is now set to rematch Conor McGregor in the lightweight main event of UFC 257 on Jan. 23.
Hooker has his own marquee matchup lined for UFC 257 up as he welcomes three-time Bellator lightweight champion Michael Chandler to the octagon.
