Rob Font picked up the biggest win of his career on Saturday night with a vicious first-round finish against former title contender Marlon Moraes.

In a battle of elite strikers it was Font who showed the faster, stronger hands as he cracked Moraes with several stiff jabs and a nasty uppercut that put the Brazilian down on the ground. Once the fight hit the canvas, Font continued to blast Moraes with punches and hammer fists until referee Marc Goddard could no longer allow the fight to continue.

The official stoppage came at 3:47 in the first round as Font wins his third straight but more importantly finishes the No. 3 ranked bantamweight in the UFC.

“It’s been a long time,” Font said after making his return after a year away due to knee surgery. “This is my third big opportunity. I finally took advantage of it.

“Once I hit him, I just felt him give out. I felt it went on a little longer than it should have but I got the ‘W’.”

At the start of the fight, Moraes actually took the fight to the ground as he looked to display his wrestling and grappling prowess. Moraes nearly latched onto a guillotine choke during one scramble but Font was quick to defend before working his way back to the feet.

Once he was at striking range, Font began unleashing his combinations including a pair of jabs with his left hand that popped Moraes and left him rattled. Knowing that Moraes was in trouble, Font just poured on the pressure as he chipped away at his opponent’s defense until connecting with enough punches that Moraes dropped to the mat.

Font just assaulted Moraes on the ground and the final sequence of punches left no doubt that the fight was definitely over.

After sitting out a year due to injury, Font certainly made the most of his return by finishing one of the best bantamweights in the sport. Afterwards, Font looked towards the top of the division as he seeks to get into title contention following this latest win.

“I know T.J. Dillashaw’s out there,” Font said. “Whatever fight gets me closer to the belt, I’m there.”
