UFC welterweight contender Colby Covington assured his Instagram followers on Saturday that he’s free of the coronavirus while also sharing some choice words on behalf of President Donald Trump.
Earlier this week, Covington attended the first presidential debate as a guest of Trump and sat in close proximity to the First Family. After Trump tested positive for COVID-19 on Thursday, two days after the debate, Covington indicated he’s heard from people expressing concern for him.
“For the people who constantly slander my name, but are all of a sudden concerned with my health and well being: I’m COVID free,” Covington wrote. “I’ve been tested 7 times in the past 3 weeks, including prior to and after meeting with the POTUS. I was also tested during fight week, as well as before and after the debate. ALL NEGATIVE.”
Covington continued lashing out.
“Speaking of ALL NEGATIVE, how about all the slime in Hollywood and woke sports wishing harm on a 74 year old grandfather!?! How tolerant!” he wrote. “Unfortunately for them and fortunately for America, @realdonaldtrump is a fighter!!! He KO’s the fake news media daily. He KO’d Slow Joe and Chris Wallace at the same time on Tuesday! Now it’s time for a causal weekend KO of COVID! Here’s to a speedy recovery and 4 MORE YEARS!!!”
On Saturday, a source with knowledge of Trump’s health told USA TODAY that his condition is “very concerning,” much different than the prognosis offered earlier Saturday by Trump’s physician, Sean Conley, who said the president was “doing very well.”
Covington has been an avid Trump supporter throughout his presidency. After Covington won the UFC interim welterweight championship in 2018, he took the belt to the White House during a visit with Trump. Their relationship has grown ever since.
Covington attended a Trump rally with UFC president Dana White and other fighters in Nevada six days before his bout with Tyron Woodley. After defeating Woodley by fifth-round TKO at UFC on ESPN+ 36, Covington received a congratulatory call from Trump, who said they’re “two of a kind.”
