Daniel Cormier thinks Chris Weidman deserves a lot of credit for his UFC 292 performance.
After suffering a gruesome leg break, Weidman returned from an over two-year long layoff against Brad Tavares this past Saturday at UFC 292. Although he fell short in a unanimous decision loss, Weidman was able to show toughness by staying up after Tavares chopped away at his legs.
Tavares attacked both of Weidman’s legs, which severely hindered his movement. But Weidman (15-7 MMA, 11-7 UFC) pushed through and never stopped fighting.
“I know Chris and I’ve spoken with Chris since the fight,” Cormier said on his ESPN show, “DC & RC.” “He is not happy to just have been there. He did accomplish a great thing by making that walk, going through all the rehab and the ups and the downs with the injury. But he wanted to win that fight. He wanted to make a run, but I thought that he fought like an absolute savage. He could have quit.
“When you’re out there limping around on one leg, which is a bad leg because you’ve been leg kicked so much, you can actually quit – and he never quit. Chris Weidman is a savage. He wanted to be champion.”
The likes of Dana White and Michael Bisping implored Weidman to retire, but the former middleweight champion insists he’s not done fighting yet.
