Frankie Edgar vs. Cory Sandhagen targeted for UFC Fight Night 187

Looks like Frankie Edgar has his second bantamweight bout booked.

The former UFC lightweight champion is being targeted to fight top contender Cory Sandhagen at UFC Fight Night 187 on Feb. 6. The location for the event has yet to be announced.

MMA Junkie confirmed the targeted fight with sources with knowledge of the situation following a report by UFC broadcasting partner ESPN on Friday afternoon.

Edgar (24-8-1 MMA, 18-8-1 UFC) made his 135-pound debut in August, defeating Pedro Munhoz via split-decision in the main event of UFC on ESPN 15. The victory snapped a two-fight skid that marked the end of his run at 145 pounds. The 39-year-old last held UFC gold in 2012. He’s remained a contender since, but has failed to recapture a UFC title four times since he was last champion.

Edgar’s opponent, Sandhagen (13-2 MMA, 6-1 UFC), is coming off a TKO win over Marlon Moraes in October at UFC Fight Night 179. With the win over the Brazilian, he successfully bounced back from a submission loss to Aljamain Sterling. Sandhagen is 8-1 in his past nine fights.

With this latest addition, here’s the updated line up for UFC Fight Night 187:

  • Frankie Edgar vs. Cory Sandhagen
  • Alistair Overeem vs. Alexander Volkov
  • Macy Chiasson vs. Marion Reneau
  • Molly McCann vs. Lara Procopio
