Leonard Ellerbe: Floyd Mayweather ‘most definitely’ would rematch Conor McGregor

Could a rematch between Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor be in our future? It’s certainly not out of the question.

On Thursday, Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe made it clear that Mayweather would be more than open to the idea of running it back with McGregor in the boxing ring.

“(McGregor’s) been talking a lot,” Ellerbe said during Showtime’s live stream of the Mayweather vs. Logan Paul media day. “Listen: Conor, if (you’re) listening, you can get that, too.”

When asked if Mayweather would rematch McGregor, Ellerbe was blunt with his response.

“Most definitely,” Ellerbe said. “That, right there, is very personal.”

Mayweather defeated McGregor by 10th-round TKO in their August 2017 “Money Fight,” which generated an estimated 4.3 million pay-per-view buys, proving to be very lucrative for both men. Ever since, McGregor has said he desires a rematch with Mayweather, who remains officially retired but has partaken in one exhibition match (December 2018 vs. Tenshin Nasukawa) and is slated to meet Paul in another on Sunday at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Fla.

The Mayweather-McGregor fight was preceded by a one week, four-city press tour full of animosity. After the fight, though, Mayweather and McGregor were cordial with each other in their joint press conference.

There have been several instances of trash talk in the nearly four years since their fight. Most recently, McGregor ripped Mayweather for his involvement in a brawl with Jake Paul, Logan’s brother, at a press event last month.

“Things are a little different now,” Ellerbe said. “Things are a little different.”

In the meantime, McGregor has his own business ahead of him, preparing for a trilogy with Dustin Poirier on July 10 at UFC 264 in Las Vegas.
