Morning Report: Jake Paul on Conor McGregor’s recent rampage: ‘It’s over for him and I don’t think his ego can accept that’

Last month, Conor McGregor suffered his second loss in a row when he broke his leg in his trilogy fight with Dustin Poirier at UFC 264. The loss is a major setback for McGregor, who had already been knocked out by Poirier in January of this year, and “Notorious” has not handled it very well.

In the immediate aftermath of the doctor stoppage, McGregor called for an in-cage interview with Joe Rogan where, while sitting against the fence in a splint, McGregor unleashed a vicious diatribe making ugly remarks about Poirier’s wife and later threatened to kill Poirier. McGregor didn’t stop there though. A few days after the bout, McGregor continued his ugly turn, appearing to once again threaten Poirier and his family in since-deleted Tweets. Even that wasn’t the end of things for McGregor though.

Several weeks after UFC 264, McGregor again went on a Twitter rampage (all since deleted), dismissing Poirier’s win and then making an ugly remark towards Khabib Nurmagomedov father who passed away from COVID-19 complications in 2020. Then, of course, earlier this week McGregor got into a nasty feud with UFC commentator and former two-division champion Daniel Cormier, calling Cormier “a fat mess” and not-so-subtly suggesting he should be fired.

All in all, McGregor is giving off the appearance of someone who has come completely unhinged and, never one to miss an opportunity to bag on McGregor, Jake Paul believes he knows why.

“Look, he’s this guy that was the sh*t for so long and was the center of attention, and now his career has plummeted,” Paul told MMAJunkie. “He’s falling off. He’s 1-3 in five years and it seems as if people don’t really care. He’s disrespectful. Even to the point where it’s too far. There’s a point in this where it’s like, cool, yeah. It’s the fight game. I said what I said, get over it. Talk as much sh*t as you want but there’s a point where you look dumb.

“It’s not even that he’s being disrespectful, he just looks dumb with the sh*t he’s saying, threatening to kill people. Then he’s out partying, back to drinking, hitting the clubs in L.A. I don’t know, man. I think it’s over for him and I don’t think his ego can maybe accept that.”

Paul has his own history with McGregor, starting last year when he began courting a boxing match against the biggest star in MMA. On top of continual call outs, Paul even offered McGregor $50 million to box him. Instead, McGregor opted to rematch Poirier at UFC 257 in January and following his KO loss, Paul had a customer “Sleepy McGregor” chain made, which he subsequently gave to Dustin Poirier to auction off for charity. All of this has been a concentrated effort to set up a boxing match between McGregor and Paul that would almost certainly sell a tremendous number of PPVs. However, given his current losing streak, and the way McGregor seems to be generally unraveling, now Paul has his sights set on another MMA luminary: McGregor rival Nate Diaz.

“I think that’s a huge fight between us and I’m ready for that,” Paul said. “Anyone, any time, any place. I think Nate Diaz versus Jake Paul fight is probably more interesting than a Jake Paul vs. drunk Conor McGregor fight.”

First though, Paul has to get past former UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley. He faces Woodley in an eight-round boxing match on Aug. 29 in Cleveland.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Nate is great because there isn’t a person alive (outside of his team) who thinks he would do anything other than bleed on Poirier but the man is going to keep on keeping on.
