Garcia vs. Duarte took place Dec. 2 at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas. Ryan Garcia (24-1) faced off against Oscar Duarte (26-2-1) in the night’s main event. The fight aired live on DAZN.

Round 1: Garcia looking for the jab up top as Duarte snipes at the body. A Garcia jab gets through. Hard body shot by Garcia off of a combination. Duarte fires off a hook that Garcia avoids. Another good jab for Garcia. Duarte just taking jabs as he works to duck in and get into hook range. Left uppercut by Garcia catches Duarte. He answers with a couple of hooks to the body. Garcia circling and countering as the round comes to a close.

Round 2: Duarte keeping his gloves high to work past Garcia’s jab. He’s chasing though and can’t quite connect with his power punches. Right uppercut by Garcia. Straight to the body by Duarte, but he pays for it and takes a Garcia left hook. Right hand over the top by Duarte has Garcia on the defensive. Garcia keeping that jab in Duarte’s face. Fast counter right from Garcia slows Duarte’s advance. Quick body shot from Garcia closes the round.

Round 3: Right hand over the top backs Garcia up. Jab to the body by Duarte, but he eats a hard shot to the body from Garcia. He rattles a couple of hard punches off of Duarte’s gloves. Lunging left by Duarte misses, but a follow-up right connects. The referee warns Duarte about punching Garcia in the back off of a clinch. Big right by Garcia. Duarte with a right, but he follows with a rabbit punch and gets another warning. Garcia avoids a power shot and lands a combination. Duarte goes back to the body. There’s another warning for Duarte for punching the back.

Round 4: Garcia staying at jab distance, leaving Duarte with little option but to peck at the body. Garcia lands a 1-2. Heavy leather being thrown by Duarte and he lands a glancing body shot. Garcia pops Duarte with a jab, then a right to the body. Both fighters cautioned for their punches being low. Duarte aggressive but he’s not throwing much as he cuts off the ring. Counters from Garcia don’t back Duarte up and he bullies Garcia in the corner, nothing heavy getting through though. Another good jab by Garcia. Duarte with a punch in close, Garcia complains it’s low and there’s another referee warning. Left hand scores for Duarte. A couple of left hooks land for Garcia before the bell.

Round 5: Body-head combo from Garcia to open the fifth. A pair of Garcia lefts land. Duarte trying to make it dirty in close, there’s some body work and an uppercut that scores. Right uppercut by Garcia breaks through Duarte’s defenses, then he hits another right. Garcia keeps turning his body away from Duarte to blunt some of the impact of Duarte’s power punches. Garcia counters well, but Duarte is staying in the pocket with him. Duarte finds a home for a couple of left hooks. Duarte ripping at the body. Garcia answers, but his shot is low. He apologizes to Duarte immediately. Duarte right back to the body.

Round 6: Duarte a little too methodical as he walks Garcia down and he eats an uppercut for his troubles. Garcia hunting for that uppercut opening now. Left hook to the body by Duarte. Garcia with a combination that’s partially blocked. Duarte attacks to the body as Garcia turns away. It’s awkward, but Duarte is struggling to find an opening for his right hand. He throws the left to the body though and it’s working this round. High right scores for Duarte. Duarte with a combo to the body. A Garcia uppercut backs him up. They trade against the ropes.

Round 7: Duarte on the offensive, pawing at Garcia’s gloves. Lightning fast right hand from Garcia connects. And another one. Duarte with a slow combo that catches all glove. He absorbs a hard shot as he closes the distance, but hits Garcia’s body. Getting one to give one. Garcia staying light on his feet, he rifles in a right hand. Left hand lands for Garcia as he circles out of the way of a charging Duarte. Crowd boos Garcia’s defensive tactics, but that should be another round for him.

Round 8: Duarte remains aggressive but he’s just not throwing anything, nor is Garcia in this round. Garcia’s occasional jabs could make the difference here. Left hook from Garcia as he circles, circles, circles. Duarte having a lot of trouble figuring Garcia out. Left hand to the body from Duarte sets up another burst of offense. Duarte warned for a rabbit punch, which was hard to avoid with Garcia ducking down and away from him. Duarte suddenly wobbled by a check left hook from Garcia. Garcia flurries and Duarte is hurt bad as he takes a knee against the ropes. Standing eight-count and Duarte doesn’t quite get up in time. He looks like he wants to continue, but the referee is already waving it off. Just took Duarte too long to respond.
